The collaborative nature of the creative industries however means that some of your modules will involve group work. In these you will be assessed on work that you have produced as a team, as well as on your individual contribution to the project. We teach you in a variety of formats, from lectures, seminars and workshops, through to problem-based learning sessions where you will work on business and creative challenges in small industrial teams. In your third year there will be one-to-one or Executive Producer style supervision for individual and group projects.

Our course aims to explore what shape, systems and structures exist, and how this affects various forms of value, the management and ‘flow’ of creative goods, and the creative process. In your second and third years, you will also take ‘Professional Practice for Art and Design History’. These courses look at theoretical approaches to museology, as well as more practical considerations such as conservation, exhibition planning and design, curatorial practices and educational activities. These components address pathways into the creative industries and address the range of roles today’s cultural organisations demand – equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to secure future professional opportunities. This BA Art Business (Top-Up) course is essentially about employability, providing you with the knowledge, understanding and experience needed to work effectively in the creative industries.

The programme is divided into units of study called modules which are assigned a number of ‘credits’. The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, with 1 credit being nominally equivalent to 10 hours of work. Through the course so far, I’ve been able to perfect a television pitch within my content development module. I’ve also had the opportunity to produce several projects, including an as-live studio gameshow in one of the facilities’ TV studios! The Art Business course has been written in consultation with external partners to ensure its value and currency. It has a direct relationship with Ikon gallery and Colmore Business District, ensuring there are live experiences for students in the profit/not-for-profit sectors. The University has put in place measures in response to Covid-19 to allow us to safely deliver our courses. The philosophy of the course embraces entrepreneurialism, curiosity, innovation and a responsive and flexible approach to current opportunities and challenges in the employment landscape.
